No.1 – St Michaels Pre-School, Parkway, Bristol

This area was designed for use by pre-school children. The school wanted not only an exciting area for the children to play, but also facilities for outdoor learning and an environment which promoted the school’s values.

Green Play Project responded by creating a range of multi-use features which could be used for both free play and structured activities:

• a sandpit with wooden covers that double as a stage area when closed
• a group seating area for children to hang out or teachers to do group work
• carved animal heads linked by a sound tube for imaginative play
• ‘king of the castle’ feature incorporated with slide, mini climbing wall and hidey hole
• structural round poles carved with words to reflect the school’s values

These features were placed in an environment of gently sloping mounds and apple trees, and both adults and children from the school have been delighted with their new play area.
