Little Mead School needed to add climbing and imaginative play outcomes to its EYFS space and improve the surfacing to reduce the mud for all weather play.
To replace the current mud/messy area we have designed a new 27m2 sand pit. Timber retainer edges hold the sand and stop it from migrating, the edges are a mixture of kitchen units, house wall and sleeper edging. It still allows staff good visibility across the playground.
A new connecting path with mini roundabout provides a link from the buildings to the playground and creates a figure of eight cycle path route. The road markings are a suggestion, staff can input what they would like to have.
In front of the building is a long vegetable / growing bed placed in a sunny, sheltered position easily accessible.
The Gazebo has been renovated, removing the perspex and adding horizontal slats to protect from the weather but improving visibility. Inside we have added a bench seat that runs around the wall inside.
For climbing we have added a round pole robinia Pole Jungle on a new rubber mulch safety surface cut into the exiting astroturf. It sits on the footprint of the existing play structures that are not used and require removal. This allows us to deal with the holes left from removal by covering them up.
Two new free standing dens with bench seating have been added to the astroturf space to provide a quiet enclosed social space to sit and observe or for small group work.
