This redesign of an existing space is intended to be an extension of the classroom with creative zones for water, sand and messy play. The School’s existing free standing mud kitchen equipment and activity tables will sit perfectly within the space and can at a later date be upgraded as budget allows.
The Sail Shades provide shade from the sun, shelter from the rain and a sense of enclosure. They can be easily removed in poor weather as they have detachable fixings. They are breathable rather than waterproof as we find that the waterproof shades pool water and split quickly.
The Sand Pit has a surrounding framework of timber to retain the sand and a sloped deck entrance for accessibility and to prevent spillage, the deck also provides another change of surface and level for imaginative play.
A combination of wetpour, rubber mulch and astroturf has been used to create a completely new surface covering the uneven and broken tarmac. We have taken into account the need to remove low spots that allow rain water to puddle by filling and levelling the sub-base. The Astroturf is soft and tactile, making it good for sitting down on. This space has been left open for children to use loose parts and existing play equipment.
