The River Park is located in central Salisbury and covers land at Ashley Road Open Space and Fisherton Recreation Ground and land at The Maltings and Central Car Park.
Green Play Project were appointed by the Environment Agency as the River Park play provider in 2022. We will be on site to install the playgrounds from Sep 2024.
The scheme will:
- Reduce flood risk to existing homes and businesses
- Create wildlife corridors and improve biodiversity by connecting fragmented green spaces
- Improve the recreational and amenity value of the area
- Enable regeneration of key development sites
- Connection to the River & City
ASHLEY ROAD PLAYGROUND
Central to the design is a bold blue path that flows though the site, taking inspiration from the natural formation of a river, with the areas of sedimentation deposition along the inner curves and erosion along the outer edge of curves. The shape allows for a gradual revealing of views and discovery of play interventions, responding to them as it meanders around, creating different activity zones. The design of the play elements are inspired by local wildlife and informed by consultations with the Environmental Agency, local school children and the Disability Interest Group of Salisbury, to ensure the end result works for the unique site and variety of end users.
FISHERTON REC
This games area was an opportunity to rethink what a traditional multi-use games area might be like and how to make it more inclusive. Vibrant – appealing to wider audience! By taking on board the needs of multiple ages, genders and neurodiverse people, we have created a space with room for a diverse array activities and people. (50)
Process: This area was designed in response to a significant amount of consultation – Year 5’s at Sarum St Pauls who provided fantastic ideas for what we could include within the play provision. Items such as the climbing posts, dodgeball, ping-pong table and hopscotch markings are all included thanks to their contributions!
By considering the needs of teenage girls, we decided to use wide hammocks which also allow for rocking that helps many neuro divergent people.
Worked with Zac Newham to create a backdrop that could showcase his gorgeous fish installation. We also are very grateful to Christy a professional basketball player from Salisbury to support our decisions around basketball hoops.
We worked with Atkins landscaping to ensure ample accessible casual seating for all ages and planting to incorporate nature.
