The Rise School

We developed this playground specifically for autistic children age 11-18 at London school, The Rise. The playground is organised into a series of active and quiet zones that allow the children plenty of opportunities to actively engage or take time out as required. It was important to include plenty of restful spaces away from the buzz and noise of the main playground to allow children have an opportunity to regain control of their feelings and emotions. We consulted with the School Council during the design process to include their thoughts and input on colour choices.

All areas are designed specifically for the ages and ability of these users and children can safely free flow through the entire space. Routes through are signposted with floor markings, climbing elements are colour coded for easier navigation and activities are grouped together into similar play outcomes. A range of play experiences were included such as rocking, bouncing, swinging and climbing. A bespoke MUGA provides a space for playtimes and PE classes. Integrated planting helps to soften the space and connect children to nature in this built environment.
