The Working Forest

The Working Forest at Beechenhurst Forestry England is a motivational and testing piece of climbing play equipment that offers the 6 to 12 years age group a destination play feature and an aspirational piece for younger children. The history of the Forest of Dean as a mining community inspired the playground theme. The poles are laid out in the same linear formation as a Forest plantation, there is a Mine Shaft platform (which ties visually to the existing structure) and a Crane which can be used in both industrial and forest industries.

This non-prescriptive climbing element uses natural shaped robinia poles that have been debarked and sanded to create a smooth surface. Attached to the poles at a variety of heights off the ground are a large number of high and low level beams, with a scramble net, balance ropes, climbing holds and foot notches. There are many entry and exit points and various ways of traversing, which allows it to be used by a large number of children at the same time. The uneven surface of the poles and beams increase the level of challenge and test decision making and coordination skills.
